ABOUT US

Serenity Recovery Centers began as “Serenity House” in 1971 when a group of recovering alcoholics founded a safe haven for alcoholics seeking treatment. In the 40 years since our inception, we have never wavered in that initial commitment to offer counseling, education and advocacy for individuals and families in our community who are struggling with addiction — regardless of their ability to pay.

Serenity Recover Centers has evolved into a professional 501c3 nonprofit alcohol and drug addiction and co-occurring disorders treatment center. Serenity began in a one two-story building in the heart of Midtown Memphis, specifically, the Memphis Medical District. This facility provided a residential treatment program for men.  The next addition was a second facility that provided residential services for women.  In April of 2000, Serenity bought the historic Lowenstein House on North Waldran just north of Poplar.  A major expansion project of both facilities and programs took place beginning in 2000 and continues to this day. Serenity now has a campus of four buildings serving both men and women with a complete array of addiction and recovery services.

With more than 15,000 alumni, Serenity is one of the most trusted names in helping clients become productive individuals once again by providing successful treatment regardless of a client’s ability to pay.  Whether you are seeking treatment for the first time — or have relapsed – Serenity Recovery Centers boasts a high rate of recovery. Serenity’s counselors do not merely treat symptoms; they look deeper into underlying issues behind lifelong patterns of self-destructive behaviors.  The core of our program is Recovery Dynamics which is a step-by-step plan of the proven successful program contained in the textbook of “Alcoholics Anonymous.”

2010-2011 Statistics

Philosophy
Our comprehensive system of recovery services is based on the following beliefs:
1 -  Abstinence from alcohol and other mind-altering drugs must be maintained in order to effectively treat the disease of addiction.
2 – Recovery is an ongoing process.  We emphasize treatment of each aspect of life that is affected by alcohol and drug use:  the physical, emotional, spiritual and family aspects of addiction.
The spirit and principles of the 12-Step recovery philosophy permeate every aspect of life at Serenity Recovery Centers.  We work to remove barriers that may prevent acceptance of those principles.  This is accomplished in a warm, peer-oriented environment, guided by compassionate, professional staff.  All counselors at Serenity Recover Centers are Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (LADAC) and Master level counselors.
 Campus

Where residents find common ground

On three beautiful acres at the edge of downtown Memphis, Tennessee are the four, three-story building that comprise the campus—the historic Lowenstein mansion, two massive older homes, and a new home that blends with the architecture of the older homes.  The Lowenstein mansion houses the administrative offices, outpatient classes, and provides large and small group meeting rooms as well as individual counseling rooms.  Residential rooms are located on the upper floors. Extensive renovation has upgraded the historic old home build in 1896 yet has maintained the charm and unique architectural elements of the period.  With more than 35,000 square feet, two of the four buildings are for men and two are for resident women.  Sleeping rooms for residents are first-class.  Meals are cooked in a state-of-the-art kitchen and served in the group dining hall.  Secure entrance with gated campus grounds and parking lots enhance the privacy offered by Serenity Recovery Centers.  All houses overlook the courtyard where the inspirational glass-walled Serenity Chapel in nestled in the shade of old trees. Perhaps the most beneficial aspects of Serenity Recovery Centers is the diversity of our residents.  Here men and women from all backgrounds share experiences, strength and hope with one another.  All grow in awareness, communication and coping skills and a greater appreciation for family.  Regardless of religious, economic, or social background, Serenity residents find common ground here.
